Interview with Jennifer Rock AKA The SKIN NERD

How did it all begin?

When I was 13, my mam took me to a local salon for my very first facial. Ever since then, I’ve been obsessed with the skin and how some ingredients and therapies can create such a transformation in it.

I worked as a clinician in laser clinics and dermatology clinics and have worked in salons, spas and in makeup artistry but ended up in skincare, as a skin lecturer for brands and accrediting bodies such as CIDESCO and ITEC. After that, I was in the media, marketing and PR aspect of skincare and was the proud ambassador for IMAGE Skincare. That is the beginning of The Skin Nerd you know today.

What is a typical day for you?

I don’t think I could call any of my days typical. For the most part, I get up, have a lemon water and breakfast, and make my way to a meeting, a shoot, and event, the office or whatever else is first on my list. The rest of the day is filled with more of the above and eventually, I get home to have dinner with my son, Matt.

How do you get a work/life balance?

Matt is currently thirteen and sometimes scheduling can be difficult but we make a huge effort to make the most of the time we get to spend together. When I get home to Matt, we put our phones on the hall table until he goes to bed… most of the time. If I have an opportunity to bring Matt somewhere interesting with me, I’ll take it.

I took him to Tayto Park when I was filming for Ireland AM and he’s also appeared on it as my model. He reads my articles, he gets facials most Fridays and texts me after important meetings. As I spend so many Saturdays being piddled on by the rain at his soccer matches, he understands that support is a two-way street. Spending time together as a family is easier than it seems, to be fair – we just base it around each other’s priorities.

What is the best advice that you have ever been given?

I was told before to surround myself with like-minded people and I think that has been one of the drivers of any success I’ve had to this point. I have a passion for spreading skin education and because of this, I built a team around me who have similar goals and have real dedication to my cause.

What is your the best skincare advice?

Look after the skin on the inside with omegas and vitamins, on the outside with cosmeceutical products and on top with mineral makeup. Also, this is not so much advice as it is an imperative, wear SPF every day without fail to protect yourself from UV damage that can lead to skin cancer and cause the skin to age faster.

Have you any advice for anyone entering into the beauty business?

Start with a respected course that is recognised internationally, like CIDESCO, and specify later when you’ve found your niche.

Who would you most like to have dinner with?

I would like to have dinner with the inventor of Blu Tack. As a product, it is nearly as copiable as it could be. At the time, it filled a gap in the market, but now, people will refer to generic brands of sticky tack as Blu Tack. I’m not sure how they managed to make something so nondescript into a household name- one skew.

Jennifer Rock AKA The Skin Nerd

Have you any advice on women in business?

Be a dreamer and a doer, plan, plan and plan, identify your weakness and embrace it. Surround yourself with a team who will steer you right and inspire you, and push your company and vision beyond what you could have dreamt. Re-evaluate regularly and never accept the way things are now, wish and push for more.

What products/treatments are you loving at the moment?

I am currently looking into and learning about Dermalogica and in terms of treatment, ultherapy is very interesting and effective. Ultherapy uses ultrasound energy to lift the skin and tighten it, and it is especially useful for those with lax skin around the jaw, chin and neck area.

Have you any projects on the horizon at the skin nerd HQ?

Everyday is a project, but we are currently running  The Skin Nerd pop-up stall at Pippa’s Fashion Factory events from now into November. We’re midway through planning our Cleanse Off Mitt pop-up stall in Dundrum, and we’re working on Nerd on Tour events and new product development. We are going to start exporting the Cleanse Off Mitt worldwide from 2018.
