Freezing your fat – Can it really work?
When I first heard about the latest fat-removing device on the market claiming to remove excess fat with minimal effort and painlessly, I have to admit I was sceptical. After a lot of research and after meeting with Sabrina from Aphrodite Laser & Beauty Clinic, in her clinic in Clane, Co Kildare, I began to understand the science behind fat freezing and when a chance came up to try it, I was intrigued and jumped at the chance to review it.
How does fat freezing work?
3D Lipo – Cryolipolysis – Fat freezing is non-invasive, non-surgical fat reduction technology that targets the fat cells underneath without harming the skin. Fat freezing originated after researchers fully understood what happens to the skin tissues when it is exposed to low temperatures, fat cells freeze first, leaving the rest of the skin unaffected. Cryolipolysis works in much the same way, destroying fat, leaving the rest of the skin unaffected.
Cryolipolysis freezes fat cells to – 6oC, where they crystallize and die. In the weeks to follow, these fat cells are naturally eliminated from the body. Sabrina says that ‘Fat freezing can remove up to 20-40% of fat in the treated area after just one treatment’. One session is usually sufficient for most areas and does not require a course of treatment. Fat freezing may be repeated in the same area a second time, but is not a necessity. If you choose to have further reduction in the same area, you must wait between sessions approx 2-3 months. This is to give enough time to measure the effectiveness of the initial treatment. She says that Cryolipolysis is ideal for areas like the abdomen, inner thighs, love handles and chin.
I decided to have the treatment on my abdomen as it is the one area that I would be the most concerned about after having three children! The machine is switched on, a strong vacuum pulls your unwanted wobbly bits into the machine. It is painless, although you are aware of it, it is a good time to catch up on some work or read a few magazines for an hour.
This is not a weight loss treatment and it’s definitely not a miracle treatment for losing weight. The best people to have this procedure done should be relatively in shape, within 1-2 stone of their ideal weight with stubborn pockets of fat that is resistant to diet or exercise and is not best for individuals with a lot of weight to lose.
Are the results permanent?
Once the fat cells are frozen, they die and are naturally eliminated by the body. Once the fat cells are gone, they are gone for good.
You need to go to a trained operator, as some side effects can occur like bruising, redness, numbness but these are unlikely unless you go to an untrained operator. It is not a licence to go and eat what you want, for me it’s a waiting game as it can take up to 2-3 months to see the results from the treatment and I will update you in a few weeks with the results.
